“As someone who’s existed in a bigger body his whole life” is one of the most passive, void of accountability phrases I’ve ever heard. You’re just a passenger in your body, huh? Just “existing” in that thing. Your body isn’t big because of decisions you made (and continue to make), but just because that’s how you popped out of mama.

Well, “as someone who watched his mother lose body part after body part and go in and out of the hospital due to extremity infections caused by type two diabetes” I can tell you that this ideology will cause you great suffering. Obesity killed my mom. Actually, my mom’s inability to control her diet killed her. The bad part is she didn’t just die of a heart attack. Her body fell apart over the course of a decade. She lost toe after toe, then spent a year fighting a foot sore that eventually claimed her leg. She lost her much of her vision, her independence, and suffered in pain. Right before she lost her leg, I helped her diet and exercise. She lost 120lbs. She got off of insulin and most of her medicines. Unfortunately, the diabetic ulcer got infected, claimed her leg, and she gave up.

Get healthy, brother. If you really love the outdoors, imagine how much more you could experience if you are in better shape. I’ve been to the redwoods. But I didn’t take just a little day hike and spend an hour in them. My dad and I spent four days backpacking through them. We got to sleep in those forests, wake up and make breakfast among them.
