I was always boggled by the existence of stick bugs. One time in middle school we went on a trip to a zoo. In the zoo there was an insect house where kids could go and solve exercise sheets about bugs. We were divided into groups and each group was given a transparent box with an insect inside. But it seemed like our box was empty, so we took it to the guide and told her. Turns out it wasn't empty at all. It was a stick bug that we couldn't find in a small box after minutes of searching. Crazy how good their camouflage is. Anyway, that's the only time I've (knowingly) seen a stick bug in real life.

I live in west virginia on a big mountain. They are very shy and seem to like red bee balm. The biggest one I saw was well over 12 inches long!

My wife then girlfriend was driving down a gravel road at night and straddled a walking stick at least a 1' 1/2 long, we looked at each other and said "was that a walking stick"? We turned around and it was gone , wind of the car maybe blew him off the road. But definitely a walking stick .
