Smoke rose over Gaza City on Thursday as Israeli tanks advanced into two key neighborhoods, Sheikh Radwan and Tel Al-Hawa, positioning forces at gateways to the city center. Residents reported internet and phone blackouts across the Gaza Strip after the Palestinian Telecommunications Company said main network routes were hit.

Local health authorities said at least 14 Palestinians were killed, including nine in Gaza City. The Israeli military confirmed its forces were “expanding operations” and targeting Hamas infrastructure, but did not comment on the communications blackout.

Hundreds of thousands have fled since Israel’s August 10 takeover announcement, but more than half a million remain in Gaza City, many in makeshift shelters. Israel has urged civilians to move south to a “humanitarian zone,” though aid groups warn of dire conditions there.

The Gaza health authority says the Palestinian death toll has now passed 65,000 since the war began in 2023, triggered by Hamas-led attacks in southern Israel. International criticism of Israel’s new offensive continues to mount as destruction deepens across Gaza.
