Installing Guard Rail Posts Using Simpson Deck Tension Ties

I’ve been super busy so I called up one of my friends that’s a builder and asked him is there any way that you and your guys could come and install the railing here at the warehouse.
Today they showed up in force and got a ton done.
They attached a temporary block to the side of the posts- this held them at the exact height we needed to bolt them onto the side of the mezzanine.
We used these 6” truss screws to hold the posts plumb and keep them from moving while we drilled the ½’ holes for the bolts.
The plans called for (2) ½” bolts- one 2” from the top and one 2” from the bottom of the rim joist.
The top bolt gets a guard rail tensioner.
The guys used this 12” long spade bit to drill the ½” holes; next, they tapped in the bolts with a hammer.
The bottom bolt just gets a washer and nut; then gets tightened down.
The upper bolt attaches to the guard rail tensioner.
This tensioner kit comes with wood screws to attach it to the joists perpendicular to the rim joist.
This tensioner ties the post, the rim joist, and the floor joists all together so there’s no movement.
Let me know in the comments how many trips you think I made to the hardware store for different length bolts? ‪@hausplans‬

IMO a proper railing should survive at least an adult tripping into it and not collapse. Those posts looks very solid and well installed.

I'm in construction and usually find these videos lame. BUT, I must admit. We'll done, easy to follow video and very informative. Great job....

Everyone here needs to appreciate how straight and perfectly placed he ran that 12” spade bit. The joist tensioner’s lag hole lined up perfectly with the hole he plowed from the outside. Bravo, good sir.

I have never seen a post as well secured as this! Definitely a railing you can lean on.

A tensioner bracket should be screwed in with a 1/8 gap before tightening the bolt in the railing.❤

I’ve never seen that tensioner bracket before, but it makes perfect sense!

That bracket just makes so much sense from a structural standpoint!

I love quality work. Only appreciating it this much now that I am in a trade. I may be an electrician but structure is very important to us as well for supporting conduit and keeping it neat and accessible.

Dayuuuum! That's some good work. I absolutely hate almost every single residential railing I. Existence. They all wiggle and feel weak. Not this one!

Very nice. Good under brace using the joist itself with a metal bracket to tie the two. Hurricane safe for that rail system too. Strong solid posting there.

I love it.

I love how the screws that will be seen were perfectly measured my philosophy is of it will be seen it's part of the finish and should always be uniform... attention to detail will always win

Very good work. That's how America used to build stuff. Glad to see men still taking pride in their work. That thang could stop a car.

We install those brackets for floor to wall anchors on express homes down here in FL, if they can hold a wall they can definitely hold that guard rail 💪💪

That means they posts can be used for retrofitting in the future. The guys can now know theres something solid to build on. Benches shelving. Great job.
