I feel like solving 3x = 12 for x makes this process much faster, x = 4, use that to solve for y in -12 + y = -6, that would yield y = 6

I see people simplifying the X equation and then plugging it in. While, I do agree that the elimination method is faster and easier, plugging in the other equation is also easy. Since 3x and -3x are opposites, there's no need to simplify the top equation, so you'd just plug in the value of 3x into -3x, and then you can simplify the bottom one.

Why not devided the 12 in 3x then change the x to 4 then -3 times 4 equal -12 move the -12 to the right u got y

Legit just doing this the intuitive way with x=4 takes like 10 seconds

If x and y are present in both equations or you have more equations and more variables, your method makes sense....in this case...not ;)

Question- 3x =12 ; -3x+y =-6 find y
1) 3x=12
divide both sides by 3,
x=4
2) -3x+y=-6
substitute the value of x,
-3*4+y=-6
=> -12+y=-6
add 12 to both sides,
y=6
