Turn the low pony into a pair of braids after the pony-band and ti gets easier to pin securely and is less likely to fall loose. Two braids can be run under the desired hair end edge and create structure that supports the rest of the 'bob' look.

We used to do this w a headband we rolled our hair up under the headband itself to whatever length we wanted to see if we liked it to cut our hair I think my mom showed me that from the 70s this was in the 90s for me

Every time I see something like this, it makes me wish my hair was long again. Then I remember the hours I have to spend taking care of it and off to get it cut I go! Now I refuse to spend more than an hour on my hair daily.

Pretty sure I've seen historical pics of women who were too hesitant to cut their hair but still wanted a short look, so they'd have a neat little bun in the back with gel to smooth it down and pair with the finger waves in the front
