Horses had a very important role in history. They were a status symbol that enabled and accelerated travel and transport.

Celts had cavalry of their own. Unsurprising considering their well-established familiarity with horses and their mercenary service Mediterranean civilizations, that already used such units.

With some exceptions, Greeks and Romans rarely used their cavalry as a charging force. The Celts, though, put a heavy emphasis on it. In some cases, the cavalry could account for one third of an entire Celtic army. Hannibal also used Celtic cavalry, with good results.

Horses, like chariots, were generally reserved for nobility and higher-ranking warriors, though even they often stepped down to fight on foot. The early Celtic cavalry relied on missile weapons and used their superior mobility to disengage and re-engage to hammer their foe.

Their lack of organization, however, often meant that cavalry and infantry couldn’t be properly coordinated. This was true even when Celtic cavalry reached its peak, in the last two centuries BC. This was possible through improved tactics, horsemanship, technological development, and breeding horses specifically for warfare. The rising prominence of cavalry can also be seen in the parallel increased length of swords. Its success brought the decline of war chariots in La Tene Culture of mainland Europe.

Celtic cavalry was particularly highly valued in the Roman army, be it as mercenaries, vassals or allies.
Celts were often put in their auxiliary armies, which was especially true for the Romanized Celtic population at the frontiers of the Roman state.

The Yamnaya ancestors of the Celts were the first to tame the horse and they swept through Western Europe at lightning speed. It is still unsure if they rode them but it is well established that they used them a draught animals.

We like to think the Parthians and Byzantines invented Knighthood, but this IMO proves the concept seems to be a combination of damn near every single european culture during the Migration Period, plus Arabs, Turks, Samaritans, Scythians, and the aformentioned Parthians.
