I'm a marine biologist who has worked with sea otters for over a decade. This cute story of a sea otter leading rescuers to help it's "lover" that is trapped in a net is entirely fictional. For starters, no two clips feature the same sea otter. Many actually show river otters. There IS a rescue that happens in the video, but the two otters are not lovers they are a mom and her pup. I don't know why the original creator made up this fictional story instead of just telling the story of how the sea otter pup was rescued from a net and returned to her mom, but that is social media for you.

Thanks for posting! One of social media's dangers is that it normalises the lack of understanding of animals.

Hey, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I agree, the true story of the rescue should have been enough. But I suppose someone was just desperate to go viral and get that Ad$ense.

I don't trust rescue videos unless they are posted by recognised charities, so I didn’t see this- and those computer generated voices, urgh

but does that mean that one otter was still bringing things to humans like stones and leaving it on the dock? why do they do that? do they do it if they already know and are friendly with the person? or are they just trying to save some of the stuff they found for later?

Oh man, this video was such a pile of hot garbage. Different species of otters, different sizes, different locations, different relationships. My eyes nearly rolled out of my head.

I see these type of videos with animals all the time. When I debunk them in the comments some people get a little angry.

I find it so funny/sad that many people can’t see that they just switch otter species in this clip let alone different sea otters. I guess people are just desperate for a cute story

I see these mish-up vids with different species all the time & i just assume when no legit organization is credited that the whole story is BS.

There are lots of these shorts popping up, all very similar: a very sweet cutesy story, edited from bits of unrelated footage and probably created by AI...

Why … why do people feel this need to make sh1t up like this?
Ugh, the spread of misinformation is out of control. It's to the point where you need to fact-check every damned thing you watch. 😠
Thanks for revelaing this to us, KP
