No one tells you that even when you already work in the industry you also kinda must keep learning and reading about your field of work in your free time. Abd you can never learn fast enough to trully keep up with everything.. so you gravitate towards narrower and narrower fields to be able to keep up with new information, packages, platforms coming out.

You gain enough knowledge, practice and implementation - keep a routine to accomodate these constraints and in as several years you can become trully successful..

But easier said then done.

Anyone can get into this industry. Yes you don’t need to be super smart, but you need to be EXTREMELY passionate to reach the level these guys are.

Ignore when software engineers talk about salary. It's varying depending on where they live. A 100k salary in NYC is 60k in NJ. People often forget about taxes and take home pay.

Should have asked them where, what stack they work on and experience level. Would have given more clarity!

I am going to lay some advice here, while you can get the job without the degree that is not the norm they still use degrees for gatekeeping just like any other profession. Most that have it without the degree are outliers rather then the standard i am a dev I have buddys who are devs most of the team has some sort of degree mostly comprised of compsci or another stem major.

I don't want to dissuade people from choosing this path as it is a great one! However it will be 10 - 20 times harder to break in without the degree and take much longer

it's for those who are willing to learn more every single day, spend a lot of time figuring how simething works and apply them and willing to put an effort into making sure everything works the way it should

I’m both a web dev and osdev, and I’ve tried applying to places but I don’t have enough experience on paper. I’ve made lots of projects never any worth much but still amazing for learning, but nothing I’ve done really proves that I’m a good developer

Getting a support job at a tech company is a real shortcut. Then you know exactly what skills they need make the move into developing.

I am going to college for computer science next year, but right now I am in a self-learning journey, is not easy, takes a lot of focus, time, and passion, but to some degree I am enjoying it, still looking forward to college, but if things don’t workout in the end, I know I am learning great skills that will help me in the future.
