DIY builders went through plenty of different gear drive designs and materials before production boards started using them with the majority of current offerings just clones of designs that existed in the builders space prior, I’ve seen most of those designs fail mid-ride more often than not. I’ll take a 10 pack of belts any day after multiple occurrences of being 30km away from my car and having a gear drive fail still sometimes still 5km away from where an uber can get to me.

Nice video but I'm still concerned about the durability and longevity of gear drives. No one seems to talk about long term wear after hundreds of miles. Belts don't leave me stranded as I can carry spares and swap in less than 5 mins.

More expensive to replace and not as powerful

They can both be equilly efficient just have to size the gears

Gear drive may be more efficient, but I'm sure it requires more maintenance

Okay someone may correct me if I am mistaken here, but aren't belt drives in fact more efficient? With each additional gear you're adding friction and rolling resistance that you wouldn't have with a belt?
