That’s crazy!!! Never would have thought about that!!

Spent a week in at 10k feet altitude last week on vacation. It's kind of crazy how much turbulence helicopters actually create that lasts a long time at low altitudes. Helicopters basically make their own barometic system😅

UH60 has 1 more confirmed kill on a plane than the F-22 has.

I never knew wake turbulence from a helicopter was that powerful to require 2 minutes of separation

Wake turbulence is the scariest thing to me because you can’t see it and by the time your brain and body can react to what is happening you’re already upside down on the runway.

On a night cross country ATC actually cleared me to land behind directly behind a helicopter that just did an approach and air taxi down the entire length of the runway. I was so lucky I was paying attention to other radio calls cause ATC never even gave me a "caution wake turbulence." I ended up doing a go around and I basically just said "Going around due to potential wake turbulence." ATC basically just cleared me en route after that lol.

Instructor taught me to treat all helicopters like a medium jet.

Way back...1992...I was flying a Piper Warrior with an instructor down the St. Johns in Jacksonville and watched a P-3 take off at ey level from NAS Jax. I had never seen that before from this perspective. He was long gone by the time I got ready to make my right turn and land on the auxiliary runway. As soon as I put my hand on the flap handle "BOOM!" the plane shook like we ran over a brick fence. I asked what that was an the instructor said we flew through the P-3s wake. That scared some piss out of me and I'll never forget about following a heavier aircraft ever again.

Saw the same thing at Oshkosh once. Chinook flew by the flight line and about five minutes later an ultralight went past and dropped like a rock from about 50 ft up when he hit his wake.

His full video describes how the helicopter pilot told the student pilot he should be ok to land behind him on the radio. This plot is thicker than it appears in this short clip. Watch the full clip…. It is WAY interesting.

I’ve seen rotor wash form into a dust devil and travel 500 feet down a taxiway! Best to go around when helicopters have recently arrived or left runway area.

I was sailing near Keywest in my 26S MacGregor sloop when a US Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter came directly over me at 150 feet off the water and its propwash was violent.

That is insane, I never realized how much turbulence persists.

That almost happened with my dad and I. We were on approach and took a heavy hit from the wash. Thankfully we were high up enough he could recover.

It is insane that the wake sticks for so long you don't normally think about that. 😮

My next door neighbor did exactly that, during a flying lesson. She turned a Cessna 172 into a ball of scrap. She, and her instructor, were lucky to walk away from the wreckage, though she needed reconstructive surgery on a shattered eye socket.

For a helicopter to stay in the air the entire weight of the helicopter is being borne by air that's being pushed down. That's just physics - action/reaction. So it's easy to think "it's just air it doesn't matter" but the energy this air gets filled with is impressive - it can keep many tons afloat!
