I'm nervous to give advice, but as a disabled person that needs adaptations in the kitchen to cook, I can suggest a device that might help you to use the kettle safely. It's called a kettle tipper and it's a wire frame the holds the kettle allowing you to pour it without picking it up. You can buy them online for about £20. (You still might need help to fill the kettle with water using a jug).
I hope this is helpful and thank you for sharing your experience and highlighting this important issue.

I feel so bad for you and other people with non-accessible houses dispite needing one. My school isn't accessible and one of my best friends (who has most likely got FND and I think she's going to start the diagnosis journey for it) has been more fainty and ticky recently. I had to stay with her after-school just to help her get down the stairs (I honestly love helping her cus she's so fun to be around but yk what I mean) 💕

Hey, I read this book called "crip up the kitchen" and it was really interesting, you might find it helpful, but in the book he talks about using the instant pot a lot, set up a lower table where you can roll your chair under. It has a lot of functions like saute, like you would on a stove, but it's easier to reach.

I'm still on an NHS waiting list to be assessed for ambulatory wheelchair use but I can't wait to be granted one. Being able to get around my home safely on my walkless days is going to be so valuable!
My home, like yours, is not made for a wheelchair and knowing some of the struggles has helped me realise what I may need to change to make my home more accessible!

My partner was in a wheelchair and when she was pregnant with our first child the council moved us into a DPU which although it was wheelchair accessible the kitchen wasn't designed for a wheelchair user. So I ripped it all out and made the kitchen fully accessible for her. Custom made units ,linear motors to open cupboards and bring forward storage racks and carousels, and she could turn her wheelchair 360°. It was absolutely perfect for her. About 5 years ago the council decided to do a decent homes project on all the older properties. When they had finished the kitchen was totally useless for my partner. Typical Council.

I understand what you mean. We don't think about it until we have to. When my ex-wife was in a wheelchair for several months after a surgery, we thought it would be fine. Then we found out that our one-story house had a lot of step-ups and step-downs that don't work for wheelchairs. I got a taste of it myself a few years back when I was on a cane thanks to some medication I was on. Good luck and thanks for bringing notice to these situations.

I'm an ambulatory wheelchair user and I look up to the way you give us a voice.
I'm studying social work and I want to write my paper on living with a disability. I'm currently doubting between "Accessibility of public spaces for people with disabilities" and "Portrayal of people with disabilities in the media" You'vr brought so much attention to both and now I can do my tiny part in hopefully educating people and making the world a better place <3

I hope that one day you can get an accessible house and kitchen ❤❤
Seeing you post has made my day, I had a really bad verbal shutdown earlier (almost 2 hours- which is long for me) after what I think might have been a meltdown - it came from sensory overload at school :( so thanks for sharing the struggles and helping me to express my needs ❤❤❤
