I think key in this story is the “presence of mind” part. Clearly this man’s conscious was weighing on him. His sins were “ always before him,” as we say, God’s mercy is great.

There’s this underlying idea that we “earn our way into Heaven.”
That’s impossible, because of how we have sinned and because of how GOOD God is.
But it is precisely because of God’s goodness (in His love and mercy) that He is able to so easily swallow our sins.
Remember though: you still try to lead a virtuous life as much as possible so that your heart is as open to God’s merciful love and healing as much as possible.

I was told a story about Timothy McVeigh, Oklahoma City bomber, that years of visits from a Catholic priest while on death row awaiting his sentence. Just like the Good thief crucified along with our Lord Jesus Christ in his right side ask for our Lords forgiveness before his death by rebuking the other thief crucified in the left for mocking our Lord Jesus Christ he said to our Lord if truly your the Son of God saves yourself and us by coming down from that cross.
