As someone who always plays a bearded dwarf whenever the opportunity is given. Iβd like to think of it as a symbiotic relationship instead of parasitic. The beard may steal my energy reducing me to a smaller version of my self, but in return it allows me to become a more effective miner. it also acts as an air filter filtering out fine particles like coal dust,silica or asbestos. (Must prioritize keeping the host alive as much as possible).

I can't find the video, but it was like 30mins of a guy from up in the caucausian (or however it's spelled) mountains talking about how their ancient cultures were the largely the inspiration for dwarves. Mountain dwellers, something about forge priests, very cool video.

This makes all the sense. The trade off is that the parasite gives them great strength and stamina. The only time the parasite's voice is quieted, is after drinking enough alcohol for 5 normal people. If a Dwarf goes to bed sober...their dreams are actually memories of previous hosts. It drives them insane. So...alcoholism.
