The name “Sand Bog Death Camas” sounds like it came straight out of a high fantasy book, and finding it did not disappoint! I actually didn’t positively identify it when we first found it, but was running through the new plants that I found with iNat, and this one popped up.

I felt like I had just added a rare Pokemon to my Pokedex! (iykyk)

So we turned the car around, and I went back to film it and FINALLY smell this plant. There are some things that I place a lot of value on physically experiencing myself, and smelling Death Camas is one of them. 😅

There are other members, mainly in the genus Toxicoscordion found out West that are also called “Death Camas”.

I don’t even have to explore to find deadly plants. Birds just drop random seeds in my yard and this month was cool ground cherries and the common nightshade! I would’ve kept the nightshade growing if I didn’t have kids that would probably mess with it

South alabama here, how close have you come to Hartford? You can find some amazing plants around here. We have a lake and some swampy areas and lots of woods.

It doesn't look anything like an onion. It doesn't smell like an onion. That duck doesn't quack.

"There have been stories of people mistaking these for onions and getting poisoned" yeah and I have one 😭

Not sure if it was the same type, but a story passed around my family is from when my dad was little.

My Oma has always been a bit of an odd sort, and likes to eat things she forages. Unfortunately, contrary to her belief, she is not particularly educated on it. Years ago, she found some of what she thought was wild onions, and took them home and put them in the chili.

No one got deathly ill, but everyone in the family except for the two youngest children, my dad (the youngest and the baby of the family), and my uncle, since they were still little and very picky eaters. Needless to say, no one ever quite forgot this incident

I live in washington state, camas is one of the most popular plants. There is another very common variety of camas that’s edible however death camas grows in the same fields at like 1 in 1000 so people stopped harvesting the plant :(

Anyone else watching and thinking about how we only know that certain plants/ seeds/ leaves are safe to eat because someone had to live and learn so we don’t have to.. 🤔 Some may have even tried and ☠️

I saw a beautiful flower while hiking in the black hills and took a picture of it to find out what it was. It was a death camas. It looks similar to this one so I wondered if it was also poisonous.
