Having cut and split more than a few cord of firewood, buried three wedges in one large round on more than one occasion and crossed a creek that I thought was frozen in order to have water running over the top of the tailgate in single digit weather, broke numerous maul, axe handles and sets of tire chains I most admire your total lack of expletives when things go awry. if you do metal on metal, always use eyes protection. My father is now blind in one of his eyes because of a tiny shrapnel that pierced his eyelids and damaged his retina and his optic nerve. It happened doing the exact same thing. Also, but less importantly, you can damage the axe ! Be safe guys

Slim axes are for cutting down trees, thick axes are for splitting wood. Either or, WD40 makes it squeak less and makes it easier to remove from the wood.

If I may, you should NEVER hit an axe with another axe or metal hammer, its a good way to chip it, cause fractures, especially if cold, and deform the eye so the handle isn't tight anymore. My suggestion is having a wooden mallet for cases such as these or flip the log, if you can of course.
