Them side slots allow you to pop the wood out. The spring ruined the hole lmao

just drill half way from one side, and then drill the rest of the way from the other side. You wont tear out the back of the wood, and the plug will only be half way into the hole saw giving you plenty of wood to grip and pull out. That spring in the middle seems like a likely candidate for snagging and getting turned into metal spaghetti in the back of the blade and a pain to remove.
