Field Day should NOT be frowned upon, and it's not a push against the "little guy". Field Day is a test for emergency operations, and if you look at what is required, it is not a contest. This is a practical means that has a long history of giving ALL folks the ability to be ready to help in emergency situations. There are countless times when Hams were called upon, and still are.....

FD needs to be completely redone. Or scrapped. Should be a more of an ECOMM event. And the event should rotate between seasons. Even Houston gets ice storms!

Your group and you ought to try Field Day, instead of grousing about it. It’s a LOT of fun! If you hook up with the right club, you’ll have lots of good food and get to know your local hams, too. Try it one of these years!

I'm not slating Field Day type activations or contests as I enjoy contesting and had some great activations with my local club, sometimes it's nice to jump onto the WARC bands and have just have a ragchew.
17m is one of my favourite bands and throws up some fantastic dx regularly.

On the mil side we are unaware of that unspoken agreement. We use those bands during competitions and fairly frequently, so I would like to apologize in advance for any interference from huge amps and things like that. There is a 400W HF amp that is standardized. I usually just run the manpack by itself on 20W or less because I'm mobile.

You are very wrong. Field Day is NOT considered a contest therefore can be done on the WARC bands. Same with POTA. They may not like it but so what.

I participated in Field Day, from my county Emergency Operations Center, which was an allowable classification. The center’s antenna systems needed (and still need) a good bit of work, and it was ill-advised to try to run 3 hf stations from there. Not a ton of contacts, but we did learn some stuff.
