The Lost World of Roraima: A Journey to Earth's Ancient Summit
Roraima Mountain has remained one of the greatest mysteries on Earth throughout history. This unique mountain, located in Venezuela, has an unnatural shape, as if it were sliced by a knife millions of years ago. This incredible rock formation is part of the Pakaraima mountain range. It was first discovered in 1596 by Sir Walter Raleigh. The explorer described the mountain as looking like it didn’t belong to this world due to its shape. For this reason, some people have believed that the mountain is man-made. The flat summit of the mountain covers 31 square kilometers, nearly the size of New York City. On the summit, there are forests and grassy areas. Here, the constant moisture and rain from the clouds help the ecosystem thrive. Some plant species exist solely on the summit, making them unique to this area. Life in this region is highly isolated, which is why scientists consider it a "time capsule." The plant and animal species here have developed special adaptations that are not found elsewhere. The world’s smallest frog lives on the summit of this mountain. Some plants in this area use suspended water droplets to collect liquid nutrients. The surface of Roraima Mountain hosts one of the world’s oldest ecosystems. The plants and animals here are remnants of tropical forests that formed millions of years ago. With a height of 2,810 meters, the waterfalls flowing around the mountain make it appear as a floating island from the skies. The mountain is home to many unique species of plants and animals, and there are still many undiscovered regions of it. Scientists believe that the mountain’s shape resulted from a massive earthquake around 2 billion years ago that shifted the tectonic plates.
The indigenous people have named this mountain "tepui," meaning "God's house." They regard the upper part of Roraima Mountain as sacred and believe it to be the home of giant creatures and nature gods. Many legends and myths about the mountain have been passed down through generations of indigenous people. It is especially said that the rock formations at the summit are seen as "giant footprints."
