I heard a reason was that the early navigation device, that worked off the stars, was placed on a board on the side of the ship. When the ship came into port it would have to dock on left side so not to damage the "starboard" , hence the port and starboard designations.

Generally right, in terms how why the right side. Hut the term originally does not come from English but old Nordic (or old Norse). The term was introduced to the British isles through contacts with the mostly Danish and Norwegian Vikings during the 8th to 11th centuries.
