Oh I can definitely relate. I applied at a job that was paying $2 less than most places. The guy interviewing me asked if I needed health insurance as well and I said yes (???). I have never been asked if I needed health insurance so I was thrown off. He told me everyone here is under their spouse's insurance and for the amount I was asking, he wasn't sure if I could get health insurance as well. The man was throwing red flags at me. I ran from that job interview.

Agree with this. I'm not a recruiter, but I have been a hiring manager. Most of the positions I hired were for entry level. We made sure to disclose salary up front before we got too far in the interview process.

While you can't ask about family or personal life. I always said "This job can require some nights and/or weekends. We give you your schedule a few weeks out, but it can change month to month. Is that something you can accommodate?". Just be straight up with people. Start the relationship off right!

When crap employers advertise about "competitive wages," I instantly think they're competitive to McDonalds.

As a recruiter, I’m extremely glad to see that this is being disclosed because a lot of applicants are not aware of this and that they are paid within a specific percentile and often that is determined based on the compensation expectations that they expose during the interview process.

In some states it’s now also illegal to not disclose the salary range

In Europe in most companies it is pretty hard to get the range. HR tries to save on salaries, so they are not disclosing it. My workaround is to tell a relatively higher number and tell that if it does not fit in the range, we might negotiate. I get the upper limit of the range pretty quickly. :D

I had a similar situation whereby they asked me what I wanted. I gave a figure that I thought was pretty high (80K) and they said "no no, that's too low" and started me at 150K. And the work is very pleasing to my mind.

That question basically says "we want to see how little we can pay you."

I always give a HIGHER range than I expected.

In Slovak republic (Central Europe) there is a law that salary range has to be included in a job offer.

I always thought something was wrong when they hide the salary and ask for your number.

Also worth mentioning that in some states like Massachusetts for example, it is illegal to ask what you currently or in the past historically have made for a salary. They are only allowed to ask "What is your target salary range" or something ti that effect

In Canada, unless it is a retail or trades, or union shop job, they nearly ALWAYS refrain from disclosing the salary they pay.

In CA, employers must disclose salary range up front in initial discussion or in the job posting. As a recruiter, I am also not allowed to discuss salary history. We may ask what your salary expectation is first (I only do this if I feel the salary budgeted is low). Never, ever disclose your salary history. It is scary how many times a candidate will tell me their minimal acceptable salary by citing their previous salary.

So true. I have had interviews with 3 manufacturing companies, and this is the exact situation

When faced with this situation, I provide a range based on market average. That has worked well for me thus far.

I had this happen at a job I later accepted. 100%! Truth! I wish I had seen the dishonesty and lack of transparency then

Agree but in some states like NY and Mass, it has to be posted and disclosed. Law on that changed a few years ago.

In my experience more often than not the company, that doesn't disclose the salaries, was the one who relied more on my expectations. They say "we don't disclose, you tell us", and I tell them I want so and so. And they either give it or I leave. It's that simple.
