Can confirm, my scribbled masterpieces in the trash were not the reason I needed therapy.
The handcrafted birthday card with moving parts that I painstakingly spent literal hours making when I six being in the trash the next day, along with every last one of its kind and more were the real culprit.

I had many of those "masterpieces" when my boys (who are now in the mid to late 40s) on the fridge, once a week we would throw them out to make room for the new ones, I have two items left from their collection so I have a memory of how they've come in life, some things you can't get rid of, thank you Gwenna, you're the best 🙏✌

I went through our boxes of our childhood stuff to my dad. He passed a year today. Getting to see the gifts I gave him and the pictures that I gave him, even the notes. I felt so special. He really did love me. So any parent. It’s up to you. You don’t have to keep everything, but just keeping each Father’s Day/mother day/ birthday/Christmas gift, it means a lot.

I stole one from my daughter that my grandson made. We hung it on the fridge while he was at my home after daycare. So we wouldn't forget to give it to Mommy and it wouldnt get lost in the car.
We both forget when his mom came to get him as we were out feeding chickens and chasing frogs and gartersnakes
So i sent a photo and message that if he got upset i would drive it in to them later.
I got a video response from my grandson
You can keep it grammy cuz mommy saw it and said it was beautiful on your fridgidator and said lets give that one to you lol. So very sweet.

My mother and grandmother saved every flipping piece of paper. After each death, I couldn’t give it back to the owners because they didn’t want it. I tossed it all in the trash. Years later, my mom complained that I donated the Depression Glass salt shakers. I threw it right back in her face with righteous anger.
I keep a clipboard of my 7 year old granddaughters drawing. I’ve kept 1 per year to show her growth. She draws without prompting, so I know she loves it.

As someone who was an "art kid" now artist and mother, I dont keep the scribbled coloring pages. I plan on keeping actual drawings they give me as they grow up though! My parents didn't keep either for me growing up, and the only ones I'm upset about were the pictures i took a long time on to give them as gifts!
I will say, they mean more to me than the usual adult, as it would have been nice to see my art stages as I grew up and see what all has changed. Also being able to redraw them now would have been awesome!

I love you Gwenna!! Thank you for this!! I’ve been a babysitter since I was 13 years old..literally. I am 44 now. Up until recently I kept every rock, flower, any leaves, and any scribble done just for me. But recently, I did throw away a good bit of these things. Unless it was from a true sentimental moment. I had tons of tiny ziplock bags with the dates and the memory behind it. But it was getting overwhelming to have 30 years of these. Lol!

I am almost 63. I didn’t have a problem getting rid of that stuff - but what I do have a problem with is all the left over school pictures from their childhood. We had to buy the entire package or just get one 8x10 back then. My kids don’t want the dozens of extra pics of them - of each grade, taken twice a year. I have a huge plastic container full. I do not know what to do with them! Also, I told people to stop sending me cards - bday or Christmas etc., because I also have a hard time throwing them out. The hoarding struggle is real with some things!

My mom kept EVERYTHING. I had to go through it all a few years ago. My favorite thing I found was a daily journal where I usually drew my dog and wrote about him. One day however, I guess I just wasn't feeling it and drew a beige rectangle with the description "apple crip." That one is a keeper right there lol

I especially love the idea for kids to have a designated spot for artwork that they can choose what of their art is worthy of display. Whether you only have room for 1 of 5, they can exchange the displayed artwork if they want new (or old) artwork displayed more than the current one. If I had kids, I would want to have such a system, think it’s beneficial for both the child and the parent (or aunt, if I would ever get visits from my nephews, I’d serious/happily designate a spot for them each).
Even without kids of my own and with a 99% chance of not ever having to care for one (or more), I find channels like this one very beneficial. Both to have a reference to know how I can support my parent-friends and all the kids I come in to contact with but also everything else on this channel. Down to earth, practical and often funny. Love it ❤

As a former art teacher, the advice I always got parents is : get a dedicated space to be the art wall. Can be the fridge but I strongly recommend having a dedicated gallery wall just for kids art, you can make an effort and have frames but just tape or tack does the trick. New piece of art (regarless of quality) and child wants it up ? Decide together which old one gets replaced. After it's off the wall, what you do with it is at your own discretion 😆
