tensegrity is one of the most fascinating things i swear. this is the kind of thing that makes me wanna learn physics, but my little monkey brain only goes "oooh ahh!"

The platform is hanging from the center string, the others are just to keep it centered.

Although the tensile elements are essential, so are the compressive ones, and if they aren't stiff enough the tensile elements can go slack and let it fall.

I had an idea a while back about a way to automatically stabilize such a structure. If, instead of anchor points for the fibers, you used pulleys on the bottom, such that the three outer fibers met in the middle, and you wove them together to form the middle fiber, you could use what was essentially a winch, at a single point, to adjust tension as needed. It would exploit the tensile strength in the same way, but balance loads. Alternatively, you could establish the same set-up, but instead of weaving the the strands together, you could use a winch for each, and counteract imbalance of the platform *actively*. If the weight was off-set, you could theoretically ease tension on one corner or increase it in another, to keep the platform level, but without compromising stability/levelness of the platform. If I had the means and expertise, I'd build a model to test my theory. Maybe someday.

This is how my body works too. The only thing holding me together is tension and stress

The cardboard doesn't work because there's no tension on the strings

"it relies on the tensil forces on the strings and compressive forces on the members" and a bit later "because it doesn't rely on compressive forces"… Sounds a bit contradictory, doesn't it?

Most of the work done by the middle string. The entire strength depends on the middle string
