A community of Scythians settled in the Pannonian basin (the Vekerzug culture) and had relations even further west, with the people of the Hallstatt culture. These relations stretched from raiding to trade and, perhaps, even marriage alliances.
The Scythian horses were superior to the local breeds and desired by local warriors and elites. The Scythian trilobate arrowheads were found and, sometimes, even adopted by the Hallstatt warriors. Many other pieces of Scythian gear and golden artifacts have been found westward.
While the warlike Scythian society was male-dominated, their ranks included Amazons - fierce female warriors and archers. Even the Persian ruler Darius I. gave up on conquering Scythians, who evaded and harassed him with expert horsemanship and archery.
