Bonus tip: prepare for cluster feeding, because those few days are quite draining if you're not prepared both mentally and physically!

Mom who just had her 6th here.
When I started showing signs of a blocked milk duct, my midwife recommended a potato poultice.
Grate some raw potato and put it on the affected area. Cover in plastic wrap and apply heat for about 10 - 15 minutes and then try to pump or express to unblock the duct. Works really well! Helps reduce inflammation.
Of course if you have full blown mastitis, please see your doctor. This is more for the early stages to prevent a blockage from worsening. Because it can happen so fast.

When engorgement hit, a warm shower and a couple quick pump sessions to relieve the pressure made my life so much more comfortable

My oldest was a nightmare to nurse--tongue tie, lip tie, recessed jaw, general disinterest in feeding over sleeping. He didnt make birth weight till 3 weeks/a month. I had to triple feed. I went to free lactation classes at the hospital. I pumped and supplemented and everything. My second born has made birth weight after a week. Mature milk came back at 2 days. He's a whole different ball park. Point is, every kid is different and I'd recommend getting used to tracking.

Being on the same page with your partner is huge to success! The difference between my 3rd and 4th babies was astounding. My hubby and I had a whole system worked out with the 4th that made BF a complete success whereas the lack thereof with 3rd contributed to the ending the journey early.

I’ve never understood how or why people feed on a schedule. I could never do that. My daughter is seven weeks now and she’ll either go fifteen minutes before eating again, five hours, or anywhere in between. I don’t feel like it’s my place to decide whether or not she might be hungry! My boobs are there for her for a reason! 😂

My favorite book was The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. It went over which birth interventions might make nursing more difficult, how different moms coped with different issues, and what to expect in different timeframes.

Having a couple friends who were experienced nursers helped a TON. One of them even set aside some of her own pumped milk for me in case my own didn't come in right away.

And the second time around I discovered that I am not the only one learning -- so is the baby.

For breastfeeding moms, how do you know when to pump and when to feed your baby directly? How do you manage your supply?

Find support from someone other than your partner
My support came from my two SIL who were breastfeeding at the same time I had my first.
My BIL started calling us the jersey herd and I loved it!
Having someone you can talk to, even on the phone, helps you get through the times when all feel like is a food source and not a human

I’m now breastfeeding my third baby, second csection. No one can prepare you for the tongue/lip tie speed bump, or the ‘my baby has tense/weak mouth muscles from the csection’ speed bump.

On my fourth baby:
Over the first three days, I feed on demand. However, if I don't have enough of a supply, I give 1 or 2 ounces of formula. A tired, stressed and sad mom does not produce milk well and baby just keeps everyone awake because they're hungry.
Nipple shields and nipple cream are your friends the first couple of weeks.
Make sure to add more fiber and protein to your diet. Eat ANYTHING you want, but be sure to add fiber and protein.
Finally, this time, I pumped, so the older siblings could feed their baby too. That gave my nipples time to heal AND I was able to over produce and put away some milk in the freezer should the need arise later.

How can you wean baby off? My baby is almost year old and that was my goal, but I don’t know how to stop. Right now she’s only nursing in morning and bedtime.

When you say no schedule, what if your baby is like 2 weeks old and has been sleeping for 3+ hours during the day, do you wake them? Cause what if they get dehydrated or I’ve heard something about their glucose levels? I was told to try and feed every 2 hours at least in the very beginning

These are excellent! The compression one especially. I’ll add one more—if you have a friend who’s bf talk to her if you need help! It can feel overwhelming if you’re having an issue. A non-judgmental friend can watch you nurse and help you position (and feel less alone).

Unrelated to the video but wow! That green looks amazing and so does the gold ring! Your eyes and hair pop. It’s super bright and not everyone can pull it off so well! Idk if you’ve given it though but maybe your color season is bright spring!?

Silverettes to calm sore nipples and protect them from rubbing against bras/clothing when they are sore.
