Fellow NIMBY here, I don't have a problem with social projects and services popping up in my neighborhood in theory. What I DO have a problem with is the expectation for working class areas to solely shoulder this weight. When homeless shelters and low income housing start getting built in Beverly Hills and golf clubs torn down for schools, then I'll be on board.

I am devoted to following my ethical principles. But one of them is that I help my family before I help strangers. I'm not willing for my family to take a huge hit to their overall wealth through dramatically reduced property values. If I had no one to care for but myself, no heirs to concern myself with, and no desire to ever move-- yes, I'd support the homeless shelter being built down the street.

Yeah no, its actually NOT an aesthetic concern; it's a safety concern. I worked downtown in a building that had a shelter right across the street. Know what we saw when the shelter opened? Used needles. Human waste. Trash EVERYWHERE. People being harassed. Cars being broken into.
The unhoused aren't evil or any different from any other human being and obviously they deserve dignity and their basic needs met, but to pretend that it's an aesthetic concern is disingenuous at best and arguing in bad faith at worst.

If you’re talking about low income apartments, I live right next to them and I sure you judging by the cars that nobody there is low income. Some of these guys are running around with new BMW, and new SUVs. So it’s quite clear that a lot of them are just people who have decent jobs just not a lot of money to afford a house or a condo.

As someone who lives in low-income housing the aesthetic is the last thing I'd care about. My neighborhood I hear gunshots at least once every month and usually an incident once a year I think about a stray bullet hitting my 18 month year old. If I ever get outta hear and buy a house and they say their gonna build one near me.... Fuck that I'd fight tooth and nail to stop it idc about ethics I care about my loved ones.

Maybe combine the asthetic with the principle. Alot of people may not like low cost high density housing because the forces that be have convinced them that such structures are morbid. Instead, have the public housing be beautiful.
