The ongoing series of coups in Africa, sparked during the Covid-19 pandemic, continued last night (08/29/23). Gabon its latest target.

Gabon, a significant player in Central African geopolitics due to its rich natural resources, witnessed a sudden upheaval when high-ranking military officers staged a coup against the newly elected President Ali Bongo Ondimba–detaining Ondimba, nullifying the election results, and sealing the country's borders indefinitely.

The Gabonese coup adds itself to a growing list of political disruptions in the Sahel region of Western and Central Africa. Mali, Chad, Guinea, Sudan, Burkina Faso, and Niger have all experienced similar governmental overthrows in recent years, with varied causes and outcomes.

The immediate future for Gabon appears uncertain. Probable consequences include its suspension from the African Union and potential international sanctions, fates which other countries have met recently. While France, its former colonial master, might show intentions of intervention, the complexities present in today's multi-polar world suggest that regional forces will largely dictate the country's path forward.
