I was a Drum n Bass DJ in the late 90's / early 00's and one particular night a guy in the crowd just walked up to me as i was spinning my records shouting "you're the man!" before handing me a beer.
I took it because i figured he was probably just high, happy and enjoying my set.
Half an hour later my vision started bending and my mind became fractured & distorted and i eventually realised that the beer must have been spiked with acid or some other form of drug.
I managed to finish my set before a friend guided me out of the club and took me home where i then spent 6 hours tripping my brains out.
I was just a little unknown DJ yet after that i had rules for not being giving free drinks or being interrupting during my set.
So i absolutely 100% understand why serious, world-renowned musicians have a slew of rules in place!

So you should have said “if the band saw that the brown M&Ms where still in the bowl, it showed the contract was not read carefully, therefore other concerns/demands also would not have been taken care of. “

I spent my career in contracting and it was my job to be aware of and negotiate every clause in the contract. These were multimillion dollar contracts so it was imperative to know what you were signing up for. The VanHalen M&M contract clause was often referenced and discussed in meetings prompting many people to include similar type clauses. Sometimes we would take the arbitrary clauses out once we were certain the contract had been fully vetted. It may sound boring but it was actually fun work.

Exactly.
Sometimes on reports, my husband was certain no-one was reading them. So he offered dinner to the first person who contacted him. He never had to buy dinner.

The M&Ms clause was in the band's stage construction rider.
They knew that if there were brown M&Ms, the concert promoter did not read the rider.
They had to do this because once they were playing in Denver or somewhere like that and the instructions were not followed and the floor buckled.

This is an accurate account of events. David frequently receives criticism due to his unconventional behavior. Despite having conflicts with individuals over the years, thorough research would reveal that he frequently had valid reasons for these conflicts. David has sent heartfelt, handwritten letters of apology to anyone he has wronged.

"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night." -Del Preston

At first i thought that was Sting, but then realized it was David Lee Roth. He sure does look like Sting.

The contract rider had fault and weight requirements. If the venue did not take the brown M&Ms out, then they did not read it.

Oh my gosh I get it! Because they’d have to read the contract to find out about the brown M&Ms

Great to hear this

I had to pleasure to see Van Halen at Los Angeles Sports Arena when the lead singer was Sammy Haggar. Great concert and very special to me since it was the only time I took my teenage son with me to a Rock Concert. Also, much more special since Eddie brought in his son Wolgan Val Halen to play with them. I mean special cause I went with my son and Eddie had his son on the presentation!!!!!!

Van Halen in the 80s “if there’s 1 brown M&M in that bowl…I SWEAR WE’LL START A RIOT!!”😂

Ah, so THIS is the origin of the "Ozzy/brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass" bit from Wayne's World 2!

I bartended at a venue where Van Halen was playing. They were the only band whose sound check was private. Great show though.

Not exactly true. The put in this request into the contract not only for safety but because if the venue and it's staff works abide by such a small detail it was presumed that they'd follow the other requests also.
Safety may have been a reason but it wasn't the only one, by far.
Another story is about a band that had to have chairs in their green room all with arms. There could be no chairs without arms.
Same idea.

When I was in college in 1984-1986 I was involved with student governments programming depart ment. My job was scheduling movies on campus. I knew the guy that did the rock concerts. He told me the M&M story. He explained the reason like you said. If they failed the M&M test, what else could they have missed in the contract? My movies were flawless.
