He inherited his visual artistic talents from his parents, Joseph and Margaret Johnson, and used his vivid imagination, personal observations and experiences, to create a large volume of art and literary works. He began writing and illustrating his own short stories and novels in grade and high school and worked mostly from his imagination and his memory of camping and other outdoor trips. He disliked copying others works, unless on a rare occasion it served a specific purpose, like portraits of famous people. Over the years he expanded his artistic ability to include graphic works for his book and cassette and CD covers, posters, flyers, and logos. He has a substantial number of published and unpublished literary works, the latter which he periodically visits and edits. Mike never had formal art lessons, though he fondly and somewhat embarrassingly recalls how his Aunt Mary Jean desperately tried to enroll him in art classes during his high school years. Years later he would realize that she was merely trying to provide a format that would help improve his raw talent, not 'teach' him how to draw.
