We all know the basic five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch), but there are three lesser-known senses as well known as the vestibular, proprioception, and interoception. The vestibular sense is also known as the movement and balance senses. This gives us information about where our head and body are in space, and helps us stay upright when we sit, stand, and walk. The proprioception sense is the body awareness sense, which helps us know where our body parts are relative to each other and gives us information about how much force to use. The interception sense is our internal sense, which tells us when we’re hungry, thirsty, hot, cold, or any other feeling that begins in our bodies. Sensory integration is the process by which we receive information through our senses, how we organize this information, and then use it to participate in everyday activities. This may look like baby smelling food as they bring it to their mouth, tasting it, feeling the texture, and determining if they want more.
