Beverley advises that although there isn’t one go-to diet for UTI sufferers, generally speaking, we can all benefit from an anti-inflammatory diet to replenish the microbiome. An anti-inflammatory diet promotes food from nature. It’s also known as “clean eating” to avoid processed, pro-inflammatory foods and particularly sugar which is known to help bacteria and yeast thrive. A depleted microbiome can often lead to food sensitivities, so a low histamine and/or an elimination diet may be required initially. In addition to organic foods, we should also be considering organic toiletries and beauty products to avoid environmental irritants. Part 2 deals with recovery diets and supplements. Beverley informs us that the ideal pH for urine is 6.4-6.7. E. coli—the bacteria which causes a significant amount of bacterial infections—favors an acidic environment. The typical western diet is very acidic however, vegetables are alkalizing, so increasing their consumption is very beneficial. Simply taking a probiotic supplement isn’t enough. Probiotics need prebiotic foods to grow. Increasing vegetables, pulses, nuts, seeds, wholegrains and some fruits, along with Vitamin D and omega-3 are essential for replenishing the microbiome. Often, as a result of poor microbiome, people will be suffering from multiple ailments so addressing the root-cause is key.
