Fats Domino - Session #56 - October 30, 1958

9 videos • 321 views • by Fats-4-Ever Fats is back on track after the mega succes of "Whole Lotta Loving". This session finds Fats recording some old standards and some original penned songs. Hitting of with "If You Need Me", sung with a lot of emotions, the band sounds great. In the middle the usual sax-break. Overall a good effort, but it's a moderate song. "Hands Across The Table" is not one of his best covers. The intro is very "So Long-ish". The sax-break on the other hand is very fine and mellow played. The best song from this session is "So Glad". The drums start the beat and what follows is a funky beat with a rousing sax-break. Pity it wasn't put on a 45! "Darktown Strutters Ball" is a very swingin' rendition of this old New Orleans favorite. "Margie", although an oldie fits Fats as a glove. Although this is the second version, it is noteworthy of the guitar-break (no saxes here!). Fats swings. Ending the song with Papoose Nelson's guitar this song is one Fats most played and loved recordings. The first version of this song had a mambo-ish feeling (see previous session). Ending with "The Sheik Of Araby" this stereo version sounds good. Tight fitting band with a nice break on the sax and Fats is at ease. Fats should be pleased with this session. The coming 3 years the King would reign the charts and a lot of surprising records were ahaed of him!
