There are 12 cranial nerves (CNs), numbered from anterior to posterior according to their attachment to the brain. All but the first and second CNs arise from the brainstem . Each of these nerves corresponds to a specific function of the body . It is important to recognize the adjacent brain structures that act as anatomic landmarks to local- ize the course of the CNs in the head.
