By 1983, after hearing the art of scratching from DJs like Jam Master Jay and Grandmixer DST (now referred as DXT), my goal was to become a Hiphop DJ. Fast forward, in 1998 I bought studio equipment so that I could produce music for my emcee, Swahili. His writing process was methodical and deliberate (a fancy way to say "slow"). So while waiting for him to finish songs I began to write lyrics and perform the songs in order to demo ideas for him. I sent my other good brother and emcee, Defari, the tapes as well and he passed it along to Beni B, our big brother who had recently started ABB Records. Beni stopped by the crib one day and I played him a song that I was working on called "Sugar Hell No!" and my published music career was born! I titled my first EP, Don't Call Me John, because my father was the Blue Note recording artist, big John Patton, known for his work on the Hammond organ! Well he didn't stick around to raise me, so creating my very first songs was a deliberate and cathartic practice for me in my efforts to resolve the pain of being abandoned by a parent. If you're reading this, then you've probably checked out a video or two; talk to me in the comments. Say whatever you want. I'm a Hiphop junkie for real, feel free to pick my brain. One love
