2 videos • 3 views • by Mile End Institute Professor the Lord Hennessy of Nympsfield is Britain’s leading constitutional historian, a distinguished broadcaster and one of Britain’s most respected public intellectuals. As a former leader-writer and political correspondent for The Times, Attlee Professor of Contemporary History at Queen Mary across three decades and a member of the House of Lords since 2010, he has made a unique contribution to journalism, academia and government. He joined the School of History in 1992, founding the Mile End Group and the Mile End Institute and publishing more than 20 books. In so doing, he made Queen Mary the leading university in the country for the study of contemporary history, and established the MEI as a central point of contact between the university, government and the media. In all these respects, he has made an unrivalled contribution to our School and to the public reputation of the University. In March 2024, the Mile End Institute launched a distinguished series of ‘Hennessy Lectures’. This wide-ranging series will bring together politicians, policymakers, academics, Queen Mary students and the wider public to explore the major challenges facing British politics and policymaking.
