Spring Months (March, April, May)

41 videos • 273 views • by Maine Wildlife Trail Videos Spring The spring months include March, April, and May. Activity along my wood roads and game trails is increasing. The days are getting noticeably longer in March and the snows of winter are beginning to recede. By mid-April, black bears and their furry cubs emerge from the den. By the end of April most of the snow will be gone . In May, bobcat litters of one to five kittens are usually born. The foliage and ground cover are beginning to sprout back to life with fiddleheads decorating the landscape and leaf buds emerging from deciduous tree branches. May budding is not just limited to maples, oak, poplar, beach and hemlock trees in my woods. Young male whitetail deer sprout their own buds (small button shaped antlers). The antlers of more mature bucks are growing earnestly. This rapid antler growth is triggered by length of day and maintained by hormone production. In the early months of growth, the antlers are nurtured by a velvety outer network of skin tissue and blood vessels. By late August and September antler growth is complete and the velvet is shed.
