It uses new resources to express and make the viewer feel emotions, experiences, feelings and conceptions of the world. It is an art outside the industry and the commercial system, it does not address a large audience, but a specific and minority audience, and it shares the interest for products that could be called marginal, or also called "cult". Two events prepared Europe in the 1920s for the emergence of this cinema. Firstly, cinema was fully developed as a medium and the popularity of mass entertainment began to decline. Secondly, avant-garde movements in the visual arts emerged thanks to the help of the Dadaist and Surrealist painters of the time to the cinema, who would later contribute to film production with their short films. This contribution was made possible by authors such as Hans Richter, Jean Cocteau, Marcel Duchamp, Germaine Dulac and Viking Eggeling, for example. This cinema has its own cinematographic language and develops an art that is inseparable from the medium itself. It is organised according to its own logic, that of the complex, fragmentary, deconstructed or non-existent narrative. The conception of the film appears throughout the experimentation and reflection, on the other hand, the shooting and the creation of the script are parallel, a process that ends for many after the spectator's experience. Although experimental film is known to a relatively small number of practitioners, academics and scholars, it has and continues to greatly influence cinematography, visual effects and editing. Furthermore, the music video genre can be seen as a commercialisation of many experimental film techniques.
