Effects of climate change on Cree communities in Canada

5 videos • 193 views • by InsightShare In Canada, First Nation communities have been living for centuries in lands of beautiful forest of and mighty rivers. However, in the last few decades, they have witnessed the great impact of the climate crisis on their land. Ice and weather conditions, flora and fauna, have all been impacted by the climate crisis, which has affected the lives of the Cree Nation communities. In 2018 and 2019, the Cree Nation communities of Mistissini, Whapmagoostui and Waskaganish took part in a community-based participatory project where they came together to discuss and to identify appropriate solutions to cope with the impact of climate change and to increase their resilience. During this project, they strategized together and developed a series of videos and a report called “Climate Change Adaption Action Plan” to document the Cree nation’s perspectives on the effects of climate change on their land. This playlist features the “Call to Action” videos that each community produced to document impacts and responses to climate change. In this playlist you can find: • The effects of climate change on the Cree Nation in Mistissini, Canada (short version) • The effects of climate change on the Cree Nation in Mistissini, Canada (long version) • The effects of climate change on the Cree Nation in Whapmagoostui, Canada • The effects of climate change on the Cree Nation in Waskaganish, Canada and a video report on the Cree Nations Climate Change Forum with the participation of all the ten Cree communities in Eeeyou Istchee. The findings and recommendations that resulted from this process are presented in this video as well as a written climate change adaptation plan (available here: http://www.cngov.ca/wp-content/upload.... These outputs serve as a great guide to community members and to other Cree communities on how to start planning and implementing responses that will help to lower the risks associated with present and future climate change. This project was managed by the Cree Nation Government and the Cree Nation of Mistissini and facilitated by InsightShare with the financial support of Environment Canada and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.
