Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Cranky Kong and the various characters are owner and copyright by their respective creators. Gameplay, commentary and editing all done by me. Finally touching a Donkey Kong Country game again and this one is certainly a change from the original formula. Since Rare up and went after Star Fox Adventures (we'll get to that someday), the mantle of Donkey Kong was in a weird spot for a good long while. Thankfully, Retro Studios, the geniuses behind the Metroid Prime Trilogy decided to take to a 2D plane and they weaved a really solid successor known as Donkey Kong Country Returns! This was a very positively received title, mainly due to the very well done level design that didn't skimp on the difficulty one bit. Some quality of life factors were applied, mainly to how much the game didn't want to waste your time. Losing a life was far less punishing in wasted time, DK was a faster ape that could hold a barrel with relative ease and you didn't have to switch to Diddy to get the benefits of his existence. Of course, with the great comes the not as much. That... comes in the form of the Tikis, or more accurately, the Tiki Tak Tribe. These guys decided to make their presence known by hypnotizing everyone on the island into some banana-robbing slaves. This also includes Donkey Kong's treasured hoard. Fortunately, the Kongs family are immune to the brain-robbing song and are figuratively fighting back and taking the island just like they did back in the old days! Unfortunately, this just makes me lament the lack of the very strong antagonistic force that was very well established, but... here we are! Nevertheless, the game is a fun, banana-eating, hand-slapping good time and if you haven't played it yet, I'd recommend changing that soon. Welcome back to Donkey Kong Country!
