The sum is different from its single members taken togheter, the collective soul lies outside the peculiarities of the individuals which make it up and may affect personal behaviours (Gustave Le Bon, The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind, 1895). Conscious thinking grows weaker and positive or destructive urges may prevail, as well as feelings of violent strength, boldness or relinquishment, and also cruel demeanours, gregarious instincts, uniformity of thought, psychological regressions. The suggestibility of the crowd creates an identification with the leaders which can warrant its cohesiveness.
