It is believed that Goddess Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva used to live here and at that time this valley was completely covered with water. There also lived a demon Nag, who was defeated together by the Vedic sage Kashyapa and the goddess Sati, and most of the water flowed through the river Vitasta (Jhelum). Thus this place got its name from Satisar to Kashmir. A more logical context is that its original name was Kashyapamar (or Lake of the Turtles). From this the name Kashmir was derived. A substantial history of Kashmir comes from Kalhana's book Rajatarangini (and other later writers). In ancient times, Hindu Aryan kings ruled here. During the time of Mauryan emperor Ashoka and Kushan emperor Kanishka, Kashmir became the main center of Buddhism and culture. In the pre-medieval era, the Chakravarti emperor Lalitaditya had established a huge empire here. Kashmir was a noted center of Sanskrit learning. ___
