Cellist and composer Erik Friedlander celebrates the release of "Nighthawks" featuring his Bonebridge Band: Erik Friedlander, cello; Doug Wamble, guitar; Michael Sarin, drums; and Trevor Dunn, bass. Friedlander, a veteran of the Downtown scene, started studying music at an early age, beginning at 5 with guitar, and then at 8, cello lessons. He grew up in a house filled with music, as his father, a photographer and an avid music lover, made countless mixtapes. Erik's desire to actively participate in the swirl of music styles he grew accustomed to hearing led him to find new ways to play the cello. "Nighthawks" came together during the blackout caused by Hurricane Sandy in September of 2012. Downtown Manhattan was plunged into darkness and without power for 5 days. Friedlander had set aside the time to work on Nighthawks and he quickly got used to life without power. Following the sun, he was up early and when the sun set, he'd work by candlelight. "My neighborhood was eerie and dark, and there were no streetlights, traffic signals or any stores or restaurants open. About every 10 or 15 minutes or so a police car would make an appearance, driving through the black with its emergency lights spinning, but no siren. It was in this odd environment of quiet and solitude that I finished writing Nighthawks."
