Born in Hawai‘i to Okinawan immigrant parents, Takaezu studied and taught at Cranbrook Academy of Art in the 1950s, where her groundbreaking practice began to take shape. This nationally touring exhibition, the first in 20 years, chronicles seven decades of Takaezu’s career. From her early functional wares to her signature “closed forms” and monumental Star Series works, Worlds Within showcases her evolution as an artist. The exhibition also features her dynamic acrylic paintings, intricate weavings, and the unique soundscapes created by the unseen “rattles” within her ceramic forms. Accompanying this retrospective is a new monograph, published in partnership with Yale University Press, offering fresh scholarship on Takaezu’s enduring impact as a modern abstractions.
