He is considered one of the greatest pianists of his time and one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music. Rachmaninoff was born into a noble family in Russia and began playing piano at a very young age. He attended the Moscow Conservatory, where his musical talents blossomed. His early compositions were well-received, with his Piano Concerto No. 1 and his opera "Aleko" earning him particular acclaim. However, the poor reception of his Symphony No. 1 in 1897 led to a deep depression and a three-year period during which he almost completely ceased composing. He resumed in 1900, largely thanks to the help of hypnotherapy, and composed one of his best-known works, the Piano Concerto No. 2. Rachmaninoff left Russia after the 1917 revolution and eventually settled in the United States. There, he focused more on his career as a concert pianist, partly because it was more profitable and partly because of the challenges of composing while in exile. Despite his success as a performer, Rachmaninoff's heart remained with composition. He continued to write music, and his later works, including the Piano Concerto No. 3 (commonly known as "Rach 3") and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, are some of his most celebrated. Rachmaninoff's music is characterized by sweeping melodies, intricate piano parts, and a deep sense of emotion. His influence is still felt today, and his works remain popular in the classical music repertoire.
