Her Dream Deferred 2024
6 videos • 35 views • by African American Policy Forum Black women have been fighting through an ongoing health pandemic, dehumanizing attacks in the media, all while we continue to struggle to maintain our dignity in the workplace and attempt to create moments of ease and fulfillment. As we strive to find harmony in providing for our families while finding time for ourselves, many Black women report feelings of fatigue – mental and physical exhaustion. In this special convening, AAPF will bring together a group of Black women wellness experts Jasmine Bowie, Abby Dobson, Anana Harris Parris, Shawna Murray Browne, Gina Loring, and Imani Samuels, to help us learn how to reclaim rest and garner new tools to foster resilience collectively. During this fourth iteration of our annual HDD self-care event, we will reflect on these words by author Tricia Hersey, “Treating each other and ourselves with care isn’t a luxury, but an absolute necessity if we’re going to thrive. Resting isn’t an afterthought, but a basic part of being human.” How do we reclaim rest and resilience in the context of historical trauma and racial retrenchment as well as the basic duties of everyday life? We invite you to join us as we learn how to develop a rest practice that serves to help us reclaim collective resilience and dream new possibilities for our futures. At the end of each March, in honor of Women's History Month and the UN’s International Decade for People of African Descent, AAPF hosts Her Dream Deferred, a weeklong series of activities focused on elevating the crisis facing Black women and girls. AAPF has hosted Her Dream Deferred to amplify the voices and narratives of Black women and girls. The week long programming challenges the narrative by hosting dialogues that not only speak to the harms that women and girls of color face but also the tools to dismantle those structural barriers that plague them in their homes, schools, and communities.
