Jurisdictions around the globe including Nova Scotia, Canberra Australia, Leeds and Hull UK, Vermont and Maine USA and New Zealand taking a restorative approach across their social systems and services have formed the Restorative Approach International Learning Community (ILC) to learn from one another, undertake collaborative research and share expertise. The restorative justice process at the Faculty of Dentistry, Dalhousie University last year drew upon the ILC’s research and experience and highlighted the potential of a restorative approach in dealing with specific incidents connected to wider climate and culture concerns. This International Restorative Conference will bring together members of the International Learning Community with other local, national and international experts to share their insights from the Dalhousie process and how they apply more broadly to the communities in which people live, learn and work. The Conference will feature leading international experts in justice, education, law, criminology, social work, psychology, ethics and professionalism, political science and gender and women’s studies. They will share their research and experience with a restorative approach within education, workplaces and professions dealing with matters from discipline to climate and culture. Day 1 of the conference includes keynote and plenary presentations exploring the possibilities of a restorative approach to climate and culture change in education, workplaces and professions. Day 2 offers a choice of day-long active participatory workshops facilitated by expert teams which will explore in-depth a restorative approach to each of the conference themes: education; workplace and professionalism and; sexual harassment and rape culture.
