A news story that has since been overshadowed by countless other events and if not eclipsed entirely by the war in Afghanistan. Yet to the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees, the war still continues. This project looks at the plight of those refugees. The United Nations estimates that nearly 1.7 million Iraqis have fled the country since 2003, with nearly 100,000 fleeing to Syria and Jordan each month. Jordan had taken in roughly 750,000 Iraqi refugees since the war began, although the total estimate of Iraqis in Jordan is anywhere between 1 and 2 million. Less than a third have a job, according to the Norwegion NGO Fafo. In Syria, the situation is perhaps even more difficult. Despite the fact that many Iraqi refugees are highly educated, they are prohibited from joining the workforce, navigating countless bureaucratic hurdles as they are stuck for years in limbo with no place to call home.
