It was already a leap year and in order to maintain the Coordinated Universal Time, two leap year seconds were added. With all the uncertainity of Watergate and the Munich Olympics Terrorist attack created, we all needed that extra time to take a deep breath before forging on with the radio always in the background. A gallon of gas went for 0.55 and you could buy a new Ford Pinto for a little over $2000.00 TV was in its golden age with "All In The Family", "Sanford & Son", "The Brady Bunch", "The Flip Wilson Show", "Maude" "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "The Carol Burnett Show" and "The Waltons" keeping whole families glued to the boob tube during their glorious reign. The theatres were doing brisk business with films like "The Godfather", "Cabaret" and "The Candidate" being tempered with the offbeat offerings of "Pink Flamingos", "Fritz The Cat" and "Blacula". The music charts were flooded with a variety of pop songs like Don McLean's "American Pie", Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" and the arrival of the sound of Philadelphia with Billy Paul's "Me & Mrs Jones" which, coincidentally, had knocked Helen Reddy's chestbeating female anthem "I Am Woman" out of the top spot. Helen was telling women to stand up and be equal, whereas Mrs Jones was not even standing up when she was with the "Me" who sang the song. Oh well, I remember lots of women who liberated themselves of many things, including their bras.
