"Stayin' Alive" was at #39 up from #52 the week before. The OST had been released November 15th with clubs and radio playing various album tracks to great reception before the singles were released . The film was released one month later on December 12 and the floodgates opened. I got the LP soundtrack as my birthday present (Jan 1) and I still have it. It was certified 16× Platinum and held on to the top position for 24 uninterrupted weeks staying on Billboard's album charts for 120 weeks spawning 5 #1 pop hits. There was so much demand that all the vinyl pressing factories produced only that LP and shunted all the others aside, creating a logjam for other artists. The variety of artists on the soundtrack balancing old favorites with stunning new songs gave new life to those older tunes. Yes, it was a force to be reckoned with and we will probably never see the likes of that again. It truly cut across all social boundaries and ethnicities and became the zenith of disco music. The biker bar nearby had no qualms about playing the cassette I got from the car and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves more. The album has been added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress for being culturally significant. Steve Dahl tried to kill disco at his Disco Demolition in July of 1979, and hundreds of copies of the soundtrack were blown up and burnt on the field. Like the phoenix, it rose again, Gloria Gaynor said "Disco music is alive and well and living in the hearts of music lovers around the world. Disco changed names to protect the innocent, or the not so innocent" I hope you enjoy these new takes on old favorites!
