Beers, Beats & The Biz will feature monthly with some of the tracks he has on rotation at the moment. 01. Stetsasonic- Go Stetsa If by some strange chance you were up in Manhattan’s famed night spot Latin Quarters way back in 1986 then you know as soon as you heard those drums at the start of Go Stetsa, it was time to either tuck ya jewels or run them shits. From what i’ve read and heard Brooklyn partied pretty hard up in the LQ and when you heard this jam come on the known BK hard-rocks would have the place on smash! They’d snatch the earrings out ya girls ear if you weren’t down. Great track with a crazy history. 02. Big Noyd ft. Prodigy- Recognise & Realise pt. 1 I fuck with Rapper Noyd but it’s Prodigy of Mobb Deep who steals the show on this. This is a showcase of that Hell On Earth era Mobb shit that most of us love. Taken from Noyd’s 1996 debut Episodes of a Hustler, Havoc laces a haunting vocal with some drums and keys for Noyd and P to cut loose on.“Prodigy turning niggas to protégés...” There weren’t too many that could mess with P’s pen game back in these days and Havoc’s production was incredible in its low-key minimalist funk. Released on Tommy Boy this 12” is usually pretty easy to track down. 03. Capone-N-Noreaga ft. Tragedy Khadafi- T.O.N.Y I’m playing this side by side with Recognise & Realise as Queens companion pieces born a year apart. From CNN’s amazing 1997 album The War Report, this was either the first or second single released and Tragedy rips it to shreds. Tragedy sits alongside Grand Puba and Lord Finesse as one of the most influential MC’s to never get his props, properly – so to speak. The dude is the father of modern Queensbridge rap (word to MC Shan and Craig G), was a member of Marley Marl’s Juice Crew and even coined the term Illmatic which is generally credited to another QB legend. 04. Roc Marciano- Snow Simply put.. One of the greatest hip hop songs of the last 10 years taken from what will go down as one of the greatest hip hop albums of EVER! Snow blew my mind when i first heard it and it continues to do so til this day. Sonically vivid beauty. 05. Defari ft. Tha Liks, Xzibit & Phil Da Agony- Likwit Connection West Coast MC Defari dropped a great and often overlooked album back in 1999 called Focused Daily. While sadly missing Likwit boss King Tee, this track bangs like a marfuk. E-Swift strings together some dusted drums with swing for the Los Angeles crew to get funky over. I loved Xzibit and Tash’s flows back around this time and i actually first heard this here song bumping in my walkman on an Eddie Ill & DL mix tape, back when mix tapes were still actually mixed and on cassette. 06. King Tee ft. Ice Cube & Breeze- Played Like a Piano Speaking of King Tee... This is an absolute favourite of mine, from 1990 and found on King Tipsy’s second album At Your Own Risk, its also the B-Side to his Ruff Rhyme 12’. West Coast production OG DJ Pooh has the funky piano loop rolling on this and while Tee and Cube both do their thing, its little known Breeze from LA Posse who takes the gold in my books. I don’t know a lot about the LA Posse but thanks to my old mate Heata I’ve owned Breeze’s ’89 debut The Young Son Of No One for a couple of years now. It’s cool but it didn’t grab me like his one verse on this, Breeze goes in on this like Cool J did with Rampage... Light something and grab a beer to this one here. 07. Diamond D- Best Kept Secret (45 King Remix) We all know Best Kept Secret off Diamond’s classic debut Stunts, Blunts and Hip Hop (i hope?) but do you know the 45 King remix? I’ve only got this on some bootleg 45 King compilation but im pretty sure its on the B-Side of the Sally’s Got A One Track Mind 12’. This is that quintessential early 90’s New York City thump, the drums are hard as fuckery, there’s big horns in the chorus and shits bangin all kind of ways. The album version is crazy on it’s own accord but Mark the 45 King flips this into something else all together. The only thing missing is sleighbells and 80 ruffnek dudes screaming the chorus. 08. Beastie Boys- So Watcha Want The Beastie Boys were the first rap group i ever heard, i remember seeing Fight For Your Right on Rage early one morning. While the cover of Licensed To Ill should be considered as iconic as Sgt. Peppers by now. They’re also the only group i know I’ve fucked with for my entire life almost, since i can remember music the Beasties have been there. They are easily one of the top 5 hip hop groups of all time if not top 3 even if you don’t care to admit it. So Watcha Want is just one of my favourite tracks from one of favourite influences and it always turns out a Friday afternoon around my place. “Mario C ya can’t front on that..” Rest In Power MCA!
